Admission Requirements for Higher Education in Uruguay

Admission requirements vary depending on the study programme and level. The higher education institutions in Uruguay set their own admission standards. These requirements and standards are there to ensure that the applicant has the appropriate skills and ability to successfully complete the course of study.  Read on to know about the entry requirements and application procedure for higher education institutions in Uruguay:

General Admission Requirements

For Undergraduate degree programmes: Students must hold a secondary education certificate.

For Graduate Studies
  • Master’s degree: Students must hold an undergraduate degree. 
  • Doctoral degree: Students must hold a master‘s degree or its equivalent.

Application Procedure

Prospective students must apply directly to the Uruguayan higher education institution of their choice. Students can apply online by visiting the official website of the respective higher education institution, or by downloading the form from the official website. Students must fill in an application form and submit it along with the necessary documents. The hard copies of the documents must be sent.

Supporting Documentation

Applications must have the following documents:
  • Application Form
  • Educational transcripts: Secondary education certificate; grade achieved and university transcripts
  • A valid copy of passport or any other identity card
  • Proof of Spanish level proficiency
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Evidence of professional experience or internship (for graduate studies, if applicable)

Language Requirements

Subjects at the higher education institutions in Uruguay are mostly taught in Spanish. Thus, in order to study at the higher education institution in Uruguay, International students are required to demonstrate their level of command in Spanish. 

DELE-Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language certificate is accepted as a Spanish proficiency certificate. 

International students must have an intermediate level of proficiency in Spanish language, which is equivalent to B1 or B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
